Yon Ankersmit

This photograph is heavily abstracted through the use of a narrow depth of field which eliminates much of the pictorial detail.

It is only the focussed faces of some of the 'spacemen' that give the viewer a hint about the appearance of the others. As a group, the figures seem to march purposefully through the spatial depth towards our left.

Reading the Photograph - Guiding Questions

What makes you realise that these men are not real but actually plastic toys? Do you have any sense of connection with them? Do you expect them to return your gaze?

The printed image is enlarged to 1 x 2 meters, giving the figures an almost life-size appearance. How might seeing the enlarged version affect your response to the image?
